In this series aptly titled “I Recommend”, I want to let you guys know songs, albums, EPs, mixtapes, etc. worth listening to and the first of these is the new IDLES record Joy as an Act of Resistance. released on August 31st, 2018.

IDLES are the self-proclaimed “Angry Band” from Bristol and their intense music has been creating waves in the underground for some time now, but their debut album Brutalism released last year really thrusted them into the limelight.

Lead singer Joe Talbot’s brilliant witticisms and gruff vocals are quite responsible for this newfound attention. Not to demean the crazy, raucous, and boisterous instrumentals from the wailing guitars, drivey bass and speedy drums. Their unique style of a punkier is one of the most refreshing things to happen to the punk genre (despite IDLES really wanting to escape the punk label).

Joy as an Act of Resistance. Is an on the nose, aggressive and murderous rock record, filled with positive messages with sprinkled in moments of self-inflection and deprecation. Great, and Danny Nedelko are hard hitting political tracks taking the many injustices of the UK at this point in time and have earned the band the moniker of “Britain’s most necessary band”. While Love Song jarringly pokes fun at modern love with brilliant lyrics such as “Look at this card I bought – It says I love you”. These fun, angsty songs pop up all over the record but one of the most heart wrenching and gutteral tracks is the droney June which takes you through Talbot’s tragic story of losing his stillborn child. The messages only get better and better from this point, with Samaritans putting down masculine stereotypes and Television preaching self love

This album is a phenomenal listen, be prepared to get angry!!!!!!
